A woman reads a book and relaxes with her cat on her lap. This poster advertisement was to promote the sale of “The Chap Book.” The Chap-Book was an American literary magazine between 1894 and 1898. It is often classified as one of the first “little magazines” of the 1890s. Joseph Christian Leyendecker (March 23, 1874 ? July 25, 1951) was one of the preeminent American illustrators of the early 20th century. He is best known for his poster, book and advertising illustrations. Between 1896 and 1950, Leyendecker painted more than 400 magazine covers.
