Description
Piano room decor British rail travel poster – “Travel Cheaply by LNER.” A mouse plays the piano as a duck sings. This poster was produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to East Coast resorts in 1933. It is the first one in a set of six humorous posters with the caption “I do like to be beside – the Drier Side!” It shows a cartoon of a duck in a Pierrot costume singing while standing next to the silhouette of a grand piano being played by a mouse. The complete set was exhibited in the 1933 LNER Poster Art Exhibition at the New Burlington Galleries in London. The artist Frank Newbould (1887-1951), studied at Bradford College of Art and joined the War Office in 1942. He designed posters for the LNER, GWR (Great Western Railway), Orient Line and Belgian Railways.
